1. Stalk yourself. Start by ensuring that you are fully prepared before applying to that first job. Beyond making sure that your resume is up to date, you should google yourself. It is important to find out what information is public and see if you are marketing yourself in the most desired way, as this is often the first place employers look. Employers are pretty honest about the fact that they may check your social media channels to make sure that everything’s appropriate. Remember, if you don’t want your parents to see it, don’t put it out there for a potential employer to see.
2. Be proactive. Going door-to-door with a resume is no longer the only way to find part-time or hourly work. First and foremost, you should utilize your personal and professional networks, informing everyone you know that you are looking for a job. Who knows, they may know of something that’s available before it’s made public. Secondly, don’t be afraid to go online when job searching. New mobile job search apps are making the online job search process much more streamlined and efficient, plus many employers today will require you to apply online and won’t accept in-person applications.
3. Be organized. When applying for several jobs at a time, it can be easy to lose track of the companies you’ve applied to, the positions you’ve applied for and the status of the job. You should stay organized, ensuring that when you get a call back from a potential employer, you are up to speed on what position exactly they are calling about. Try keeping a job-search notebook where you list: company, position, contact information and follow-up status. That way you’ll know exactly where you are with each application, and when an employer does call, you can look up exactly who they are without fumbling around trying to remember everything off the top of your head.
4. Be open-minded. It is important to be open-minded when searching for a job. Maybe you didn’t land your dream job the first time around, but you can gain valuable skills and experience working at almost any job. However, that doesn't mean you should just apply to anything and everything, employers like to see that you have been selective in your job search and your experience fits the job’s qualifications. Remember, sometimes a foot in one door can lead to another one opening later on that is more aligned with what you want to do for a career.
5. Be persistent. The importance of following up on your applications can’t be stressed enough. Hiring managers emphasize that following up is a great way to stand out in the sea of applications, and get noticed. This is typically done over the phone, through email or in person. Employers have told us that following up in person (if done the right way) can really prove that you are passionate about working there. You should also follow up after an interview, to thank them for taking the time to speak with you. The interviewer will see just how much you want the job and how loyal of an employee you will make.
